    I get back to the interview waiting area, the manager calls my name, and we sit down, he asks me my name, and what position I was applying for, and he asks what my availability is (this position is part- time)

    I say "weekday nights, weekends, and holidays, I think it lists it on the application" and he says "okay so I am looking for someone with full availability, so I'm going to have to reject your application." I get up and leave.

    It asked for availability in the application. Why'd they extend a contingent job offer then. Did this dude literally not read anything I submitted before pushing the contingent job offer button?

    How can anyone survive off half an already low-paying job? Neither of two part-time jobs will schedule around the other, so finding full- time employment becomes increasingly impossible. Especially when all the full-time jobs are being broken into two part-time jobs to avoid paying benefits. It's catastrophically unsustainable

    E: oh and I just remembered, splitting one good job into two crappy jobs usually counts as "creating jobs" and "increasing employment". But it's masking the more sinister epidemic of mass under- employment.     pool_fizzle 2 hr. ago A contingent job offer most likely means they live in a state that attempted worker protections. For example, in my state you can't even ask about criminal history until the first face to face interview.

    We also have to give someone a contingent job offer before we can run a background check. Then, if we decide not to go through with it because of the background check, we have to provide a whole bunch of documentation that gives them a chance to appeal or argue that we were unfair.

    Denying someone a job because their availability isn't exactly what you want sounds like an easy out from doing all that.
